Tata Institute of Fundamental ResearchTata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) conducts an annual summer program called TIFR VSRP in which talented students are introduced to research activities in the areas of Computer Science, Physics, Astronomy, Chemistry, Mathematics and Biology.

Under this TIFR internship, the selected students are expected to work on a research project under the supervision of a TIFR researcher.

TIFR pursues basic research primarily in Theoretical Computer Science, Astronomical, Biological, Chemical and Physical Sciences, Mathematics and runs a graduate program leading to a PhD in all these areas.

About Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR): The Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) is a public research institution in Mumbai and Hyderabad, India, dedicated to basic research in mathematics and the sciences. TIFR conducts research primarily in the theoretical computer science, natural sciences, mathematics, the biological sciences and and is considered to be one among India’s outstanding research centres.

Who can apply: Motivated Bachelor (BE/B.Tech/B.Sc/BS) and Masters (ME/M.Tech/M.Sc/MS) students who have completed at least two years of undergraduate coursework in Science and Engineering fields are eligible. 2nd year students who will complete two years of undergraduate study before the commencement date of the program can also apply.

Research Areas: Computer Science, Physics, Chemistry, Maths and Biology. In case you are eligible, check the research areas here.

FYI, the students do not decide the project topic. Depending on your interest and competency, the TIFR will assign you a project guide (if you are selected), and you will together decide on the details of the project. If you would really like to work in a very particular area please mention your interests on the VSRP application form.

Location: The programs are held both at the Mumbai campus of the TIFR as well as at the National Centre for Radio Astrophysics (NCRA), Pune.

Duration: About 2 months (May 8 – July 15, 2017) in summer 2017 for all programs except Maths. The VSRP for Mathematics will be held from June 5 – July 5, 2017.

The TIFR VSRP is an VERY INTENSIVE program, and they do not allow students to take off in the middle, or reschedule the timings. If you are NOT free for the ENTIRE period, please do NOT apply for the VSRP program.

Stipend: Participants are paid a monthly stipend of Rs 7000/-, Sleeper class return railway fare and are provided with shared hostel accommodation.

The last date to apply for this internship is January 31, 2017 this year. The deadline for the Maths VSRP is February 28, 2017.
